Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing these drugs should be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
