This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
