EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
